So Blu by Blu Cantrell

Blu Cantrell is tired. Tired of no-good, wrong-doin', sweet-talkin', always-cheatin', ever-schemin' men. Luckily for listeners, the Providence, Rhode Island native (discovered by Arista CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid) has decided to settle her scores in song. In the process, she delivers a gorgeously heartfelt soul album that manages to avoid no-scrubs, bills-bills-bills clichés, and get down to the business of broken-heart healing. Lacing scats into melismas and blues runs into R&B riffs, this torch-singing newcomer doesn't just take it to church with her debut: she takes it to the dimly lit juke joint, the crowded club, and the smoky underground cafe. Transitioning effortlessly from starry-eyed breathlessness to Eartha Kitt growl, ! to full-throttle, shiver-inducing wail, Cantrell incants catharsis with haunting ballads like "That One," in which she muses upon finding a soulmate, and "I'll Find a Way," on which she offers up a glorious, show-stopping vocal transition out of the song's bridge that would do Chaka Khan proud. Cantrell, the daughter of a jazz-singing mother, also manages to succeed with up-tempo numbers here--"Hit 'Em up Style (Oops)," the album's first single, is a jubilant revenge anthem, complete with an infectious, finger-wagging, Charleston riff that should have the ladies wiggling and their fellas checking themselves--and their wallets. --Sylvia W. Movie DVDOnce upon a time, in the 1980s and early 1990s, American independent movies did not seek to merely ape Hollywood formulas. They were more than just feature-length resumes for shrewd, enterprising filmmakers who had nothing to say, but dreamed of saying it with a big-studio budget. Back then, independent films provided a different kind of movie experience; they challenged and provoked audiences--and none more so than 1991's The Rapture, written and directed by Michael Tolkin, the man who wrote the screenplay for The Player, Robert Altman'! s scathing anti-Hollywood comedy. Mimi Rogers plays Sharon, a lost soul who gives up her hedonistic life of sex and drugs when she finds God and becomes a fundamentalist Christian fanatic. Her pilgrim's progress, presented in a deadpan, nonjudgmental style, culminates quite literally in the title event--the Second Coming, the Apocalypse, the end of the world, or whatever you want to call it. Rogers's fearless performance becomes all the more provocative when you recall that the actress is a lifelong member of the Church of Scientology. The Rapture is a mind-boggling, wildly ambitious movie that's open to myriad interpretations. But no matter what you make of it, it's sure to leave you engaged and shaken. --Jim Emerson Beautiful teen Mia Sampson (Sarah Lind) dreams to be a model and her dreams seem to come true when she is asked to pose for photographs to be displayed on an Internet website for "members only." But the owner of the website posts Mia's pictures o! n an xxx-rated site. To remove the photos from the web and res! tore her daughter's dignity, Mia's mother (Mimi Rogers) must use all her wiles to fight the pornographers. Selling Innocense is a timely and all-too-true fable of the dangers of illicit internet pornography.Australia released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. Nina and Fitch find that they are both mutually attracted, and annoy one another a great deal. Their differences of temperament and lifestyle create friction, and they find their similarities nearly as grating. Through flashbacks we learn how Nina and Fitch have arrived at this meeting, and see that perhaps they have enough common ground to ! learn some important lessons from each other.BASED ON THE BEST SELLING NOVEL 'A WINDOW FOR ONE YEAR', THIS FILM CHRONICLES ONE PIVOTAL SUMMER IN THE LIVES OF FAMOUS CHILDREN'S BOOK AUTHOR TED COLE & HIS BEAUTIFUL WIFE MARION. IT IS A PROVOCATIVE STORY ABOUT ONE COUPLE'S EMOTIONAL JOURNEY INTO A WORLD OF DARING SENSUALITY & STUNNING HONESTY.Jeff Bridges demonstrates once again that he is one of the finest actors in film. Ted Cole (Bridges, Seabiscuit, The Big Lebowski), a successful writer/illustrator of children's books, invites a young student named Eddie (Jon Foster) to be his assistant for a summer. Eddie doesn't realize he's being drawn into the middle of a dissolving marriage until Ted's wife Marion (Kim Basinger, L. A. Confidential) invites him into an affair--which Ted both condones and resents. Slowly, Eddie comes to understand the secrets that are tearing the marriage apart. Bridges never shows off; everything he does seems simple, natural, alm! ost unavoidable, but it's also utterly watchable. Whether you ! like the movie will depend on whether you like John Irving (The Door in the Floor is based on part of his novel A Widow for One Year), but Bridges's performance is undeniable. Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) does something here he should be doing a lot more often: directing contemporary film noir with his eye for extraordinary art direction.
